"The clarity of the author's thought and the carefulness of his exposition make reading this book a pleasure," noted the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society upon the publication of John L. Kelley's General Topology. This comprehensive treatment for beginning graduate-level students immediately found a significant audience, and it remains a highly worthwhile and relevant book for. In the first part of the book will be found a quick review of the basic definitions of general topology interspersed with a large num ber of exercises, some of which are also described as theorems. (The use of the word Theorem is not intended as an indication of difficulty but of importance and usefulness.

Dec 20, · Fantastic book, it was the book for my three person presentation-based General Topology course, in which we basically had to do all of our learning from the book, and this book was very easy to learn from. It obviously takes effort and thought to read through everything, but I left every section with a thorough understanding of the topic/5(25).

Oct 29, · One more plus for the book, his treatment of set theory in an appendix is very nice, and frequently cited. I give it 5 stars for what it is, a fine textbook of basic general topology, but want to apprise you of what the limitations are. It is appropriately titled, but if you are a novice as I was, try not to confuse "general topology" with /5(9).

The goal of this part of the book is to teach the language of math-ematics. More specifically, one of its most important components: the language of set-theoretic topology, which treats the basic notions related to continuity.

The term general topology means: this is the topology that is needed and used by most mathematicians. A permanent. That's the first half of the book. The second part is a nice introduction to Algebraic Topology. Again, quoting Munkres, at the time he was writing the book he knew very little of Algebraic Topology, his speciality was General (point-set) topology.

So, he was writing that second half as he was learning some basics of algebraic topology. In mathematics, general topology is the branch of topology that deals with the basic set-theoretic definitions and constructions used in topology.

It is the foundation of most other branches of topology, including differential topology, geometric topology, and algebraic topology.

Another name for general topology is point-set topology. General Topology book. Read reviews from world’s largest community for readers. Aimed at graduate math students, this classic work is a systematic exposi /5(20).

Jan 01, · Among the best available reference introductions to general topology, this volume is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students.

Its treatment encompasses two broad areas of topology: "continuous topology," represented by sections on convergence, compactness, metrization and complete metric spaces, uniform spaces, and function spaces; and /5(8). Aimed at graduate math students, this classic work is a systematic exposition of general topology and is intended to be a reference and a text.

As a reference, it offers a reasonably complete coverage of the area, resulting in a more extended treatment than normally given in a course. As a text, the exposition in the earlier chapters proceeds at a pedestrian pace/5(7).

Topology book. Read 27 reviews from the world. rough book to get through and it doesn't motivate the concepts of a topological space right away from metric spaces, but this is a minor oversight and doesn't really detract from the book's strengths.

i haven't read this book in a while so i can't really give a detailed account about it's strengths and weaknesses, but there's a reason why it's a /5. My answer was you should not change your first choise. A wise choise because Kosniowski's "A first course in algebraic topology" is an user-friendly book to learn basic definitions and theorems about general topology, homotopy theory and fundamental group.
